A wet pan mill consists of several key components that work together to achieve effective grinding. The pan is the central stationary basin, typically made of cast iron or steel, with a flat or slightly concave bottom. Its size varies, ranging from small pans (1-2 meters in diameter) for artisanal mining to larger industrial models (up to 5 meters). The pan holds the ore slurry during the grinding process.

The roller(s) are heavy cylindrical or conical components that rotate within the pan. Most wet pan mills feature 2-4 rollers, made of high-carbon steel or cast iron, designed to exert significant pressure on the ore. The rollers are mounted on a central shaft or frame, and their weight-often enhanced by additional counterweights-ensures effective crushing and grinding of particles.
A drive system powers the rotation of the rollers. This typically includes an electric motor or diesel engine connected to a gearbox, which transmits power to the roller shaft via belts or chains. The rotation speed is relatively low (5-20 rpm) to maximize grinding efficiency without generating excessive heat.

A water inlet allows controlled addition of water to the pan, creating a slurry with the ore. Some models include scrapers or plows attached to the roller assembly, which agitate the slurry, prevent material buildup on the pan walls, and ensure uniform grinding. A discharge outlet at the edge of the pan allows the ground slurry to flow out once the desired particle size is achieved.
